Description
The pump house, built around 1886 to 1888, is located approximately 25 meters south-east of The Old Farmhouse at Style Place. It is constructed of brick, featuring an irregular mixture of red and ochre-yellow bricks that are used intentionally on the cornices and window heads. The structure is square in plan and resembles a tower.
On the south-west side, there is a round-headed opening that is boarded, while the other three sides have small openings at ground level. At the top, there is a corbelled brick cornice above a course of dentils. Above this, the brickwork tapers to a narrow shaft that houses a water tank. The pump was used for a nearby artesian well, which, according to the owner, was the first tube-bored artesian well in Kent, reaching approximately 860 feet down to the Thames aquifer. It was originally dug to serve Simmons Brewery located at Style Place and is said to have supplied water to a glassworks. The pump house is part of a remarkably complete group of listed brewery buildings surrounding Style Place Farmhouse.
