Description

Poplar Farm Oast is a converted oasthouse from the mid to late 19th century, which was transformed into a house around 1980. It is built from English bond red brick, featuring some burnt headers, and has a peg-tile roof.

The building was originally a three-kiln oasthouse, with the former stowage facing south. It has two former hop kilns on the left (west) end and another nearby at the rear, and it stands two storeys high.

The exterior includes windows with circa 1980 casements that do not have glazing bars. The front of the stowage has four regular first-floor windows that likely occupy original openings. The front door, located at the left end, features a circa 1980 door with sidelights, while a secondary doorway at the right end retains its original round-headed arch. The ground floor is sheltered by a pent roof supported by a four-bay arcade of plain timber posts. There is a cogged brick eaves cornice along the stowage and kilns, and the roof is hipped to the right. The former hop kilns are circular with tall conical roofs topped by cowls.

The interior has not been inspected. This former oasthouse, especially its kiln roofs, is part of a notable group of listed buildings in the area surrounding Barnes Place.
