Description
The Animal House and Stables, located approximately 35 metres west of the Old Farmhouse at Style Place, date from the mid to late 19th century. Constructed of ochre-coloured Flemish bond brick, with the stable featuring red brick with burnt headers, the buildings have a peg-tile roof.
The structure is arranged on a north-west to south-east axis and consists of two parts. The larger, barn-like animal house at the north-west end, which dates from the mid-19th century, faces south-west. The stable, built in the late 19th century and featuring a granary above, is attached to the end of the animal house and faces north-east.
The exterior of the animal house displays a symmetrical front with two windows, now boarded over, on either side of a central doorway that has a segmental arch head. The doorway is relatively small and features a brick surround that stands proud of the wall. An old plank door is present, and the gable-ended structure has circular owl holes at each end. The rear wall includes a pattern of ventilation holes. The stable is lower in height, and a straight join is visible between the two buildings on the south-west side. The roof on this side maintains the same eaves and pitch but is lower and narrower, with a blind façade that includes a plain brick buttress. On the north-east side, there is a wide doorway suitable for carts and a first-floor doorway leading into the granary, with the stable roof also being gable-ended.
Inside, the animal house features an open 4-bay roof supported by interrupted tie-beam trusses made from large scantling. The joints are pegged, although many have been reinforced with bolts and iron straps. The trusses have clasped purlins and king posts above the collar. The stable has plain carpentry details, but its roof was not inspected.
These buildings are part of a notably complete group of brewery and ancillary structures surrounding the Old Farmhouse at Style Place.
