Description
Fairhill is a country house built around 1840, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The exterior is finished in stucco and features an eaves cornice beneath slate roofs that are hipped at the ends of the building. The house has two storeys and a symmetrical facade with a layout of 2-1-3-1-2 bays. Notable architectural elements include two pedimented and projecting sections with pilaster-strips flanking the central three bays, which contain tripartite windows topped with bracketed pediments on the ground floor. Most of the windows are casements. The outer wings feature string-courses, with French casements on the ground floor and balustraded, bracketed balconies above.
The late 19th-century alterations include a central three-bay break on the ground floor that houses a lobby with marble steps and reveals, along with low relief decoration over the doorway and a panelled door. The rear of the house has a moulded string course over the ground floor and a layout of 4-3-4 bays, with the central three bays projecting forward and topped with paired pediments.
Inside, the entrance hall is adorned with Doric fluted columns. There are three Louis Quinze revival fireplaces from the late 19th century, as well as a circa 1740 fireplace with flanking Atlant Herms, which has been relocated to the dining room. The interior features early Victorian floral cornices throughout.
