Description

This outbuilding, located approximately 40 meters southwest of the Old Farmhouse at Style Place, is likely a former oasthouse dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick, including burnt headers, and features a slate roof.

The building has a two-cell plan facing northeast. The left cell is square and smaller than the right cell, which has opposing full-height doorways at the front and back next to the left cell. Both cells are two stories high, and at the rear, the roof extends over a secondary outshot enclosed by a brick wall, which includes a cart entrance at the right end. This outshot was likely used as a loading bay.

On the exterior, the front features a wide full-height doorway with plain plank doors on each level. Each cell has its own roof: a pyramid roof over the left cell and a hipped roof over the right cell. The right end wall has a doorway with a segmental arch head and a first-floor window that contains a late 19th century to early 20th century window with glazing bars.

Inside, there is plain carpentry detail, and the larger right cell has an interesting roof structure with four bays of scissor-braced trusses, including raking struts from the scissor-blades to the purlins. The left cell has a contemporary pyramid roof construction. Both roofs have square holes at the apex, which are now plastered over internally and slated externally, but these are believed to have been former oast chimneys.

This former oasthouse is part of a notably complete group of 19th century brewery and ancillary buildings surrounding the Old Farmhouse at Style Place.
