Description
The Old Town Hall and Police Station, primarily built in the 19th century, has a north portion that dates back to the 17th century. The ground floor is cement rendered, while the first floor features flint facing with brick quoins and a tiled roof. The front elevation showcases a curved gable with one round window and one round-headed sash window, along with a stringcourse. The ground floor includes arcading with keystones, with the central section forming a doorcase. There are sash windows throughout. The south portion of the building is two storeys, also cement rendered, with a dropped moulded eaves cornice, three blank spaces on the first floor, and five sash windows on the ground floor. Connected by a footbridge is an additional two-storey section, cement rendered, featuring a balustraded parapet and sash windows with pediments above. This section is also attached to a Victorian cast iron bus shelter. Inside, the courtroom contains some fine 18th-century overmantels salvaged from demolished buildings.
