Description
The Theatre Royal, located on Addington Street, was built in 1787, suffered a fire in 1829, and was remodelled in 1879. The exterior is primarily from the 19th century and features two storeys of stock brick, with the front elevation stuccoed. It has a parapet and a dropped moulded eaves cornice supported by brackets, along with three sash windows on the Addington Street side. The windows are adorned with cornices, brackets, and scrolls. The main doorcase, from the 19th century, includes half columns, consoles, and swags, topped with a moulded pediment featuring swags and reeded pilasters. The elevation facing Hawley Square showcases an 18th-century wooden doorcase with an open pediment, a round-headed fanlight with intact glazing bars, and a six-panelled door. The interior dates to the 19th century and includes a border of acanthus leaf motifs around the proscenium arch and a palm leaf motif on the ceiling. The Dress Circle features six cast iron columns with palm leaf capitals and an elaborate balcony decoration of ropes, roses, and swags, along with shell moulding. The Theatre Royal is part of a group with the London Tavern and No 39 (Lochaber House).
