Description
Building Number 86 is a disused dockyard building located on Jetty Road in Queenborough, Sheppey. It was constructed in the late 19th century, after 1889, with a northeast block added around 1900. The building features an iron frame with brick infill for the lower walls. The northern block has a hipped corrugated iron roof, while the northeast block has a gabled corrugated iron roof, and the southern block is topped with a gabled slate roof.
The structure consists of three sections: a rectangular southern block, a square northern block, and a larger northeast block that includes an external chimney. The single-storey southern block has six bays, with upper timber small-paned windows set above brick-filled panels, continuing around to the southern gable, which features a tall central doorway. The taller five-bay northern block has a similar double tier of windows and a lantern on top of the hipped roof. The two-storey northeast block has a steel frame and brick panels, with a roof parallel to the northern block and an upper floor clad in corrugated iron above strips of original glazing.
Inside, the southern block contains steel or cast-iron H-section columns and wrought-iron trusses, with curved compression members supporting the roof. The northern block also has H-section columns, an iron roof supported by queen and princess rods and angled struts, along with a collar supporting the louvre. The northeast block features a timber roof.
Historically, this building was likely constructed for ship repairing and is situated to the east of Sir John Rennie's dry docks from the 1820s. It is part of a group with these docks and other nearby structures, including the Boat Store and Building 84. The northern block was built on the site of supplying kilns that were established between 1847 and 1862. This building is a later addition within Rennie's planned layout and holds group value with the other listed structures.
