Description
The grotto-shaped folly located to the north-east of the Ship on Shore Public House in Marine Town, Sheerness, dates from around 1830. It was constructed by a farmer who discovered a ship's cargo of cement in barrels washed ashore. The barrels, having soaked up seawater, caused the cement to set into barrel-shaped blocks that were used to build the walls of the folly. The structure is a single storey made of cement blocks, flint, and burr bricks, featuring five pointed arches that are now filled in with weatherboarding. The parapet has a series of curves.
