Description
Backs House is a 17th-century timber-framed building located on the east side of High Street in Milton Regis. It is named after Humphrey Back, who owned it around 1688. The house originally featured an open arcade of timber work on the ground floor, as noted in the Archaeologia Cantiana. The timber framing is visible on the sides, with plaster infilling on the first floor and brick infilling below, while the front is plastered and painted to imitate timbering. The first floor overhangs on a bressumer supported by brackets. The building has two storeys and a tiled roof with two hips. On the first floor, there are three casement windows, and below, there is a small bay with a modern shop window and three original windows with depressed heads, although these have plate glass inserted. The doorcase features a fanlight with a depressed head. Backs House is part of a group that includes Nos 52 to 76 (even), 80 to 104 (even), 104A, and 110.
