Description

House, dating from the 14th century with significant additions in 1616. It is timber framed and has exposed close-studding with plaster infill, some of which is rendered and some tile hung, set on a red brick base. The roof is covered in plain tiles and is half-hipped with gablets. There are three hipped dormers and stacks to the left and centre right. The windows on the first floor include two 3-light transomed windows, one single light and one 5-light window. The ground floor has two 5-light transomed windows with hipped hoods, and one single-light window. All dormers and windows have central arched transoms. A two-storey hipped porch projects centrally, with 20th-century glass outer doors and a multi-panelled inner door. The right return front is tile hung and has oriel windows on each floor. A rear wing is timber framed with close-studding on a red brick base and includes a 20th-century canted bay window. Inside, the rear wing retains parts of a 14th or 13th century aisled hall with a scissor-truss roof. The main range, added in 1616, includes contemporary cellars, wainscot panelling, doors, and a turned baluster screen to the service area. There is a three-storey open well staircase with turned balusters, bell pendants and a moulded handrail. A large oak fireplace has carved coupled baluster pilasters with scrolled and foliated frieze and cornice mantel. The house was originally known as Gregories, and the 1616 wing was added by Mr Parmiter.
