Description

These buildings form part of the only remaining section of the palace constructed by Archbishop Warham in the early 16th century. The original construction is of red brick with blue headers, along with stone quoins and dressings. A high galleted rubble plinth supports a moulded stone coping. Windows consist of one or two Tudor-arched lights, largely set beneath hoodmoulds. The two-storey cottages, ranging from one to two windows in width, have their first floors rebuilt in brick and have renewed tiled roofs. They feature modern casement windows and modern doors; the door to number 2 is set within an original 4-centred stone arch. A storage building, formerly the chapel, also has a renewed tiled roof, hipped over half-octagonal ends. It includes two doors, one under a moulded stone 3-centred arch and the other under a 4-centred arch. At the west end of the range stands the roofless tower of the palace, which is now an Ancient Monument but is visually united with the group. The buildings in The Green are grouped together as a single entity.
