Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is a cruciform church dating from around 1190, with alterations from the 14th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings and has some repairs in stock brick, topped with a tiled roof. In 1816-17, George Smith rebuilt the tower in brick and removed the eastern half of the chancel. Ewan Christian restored the stonework in 1862-63. The south porch is medieval. The 14th-century nave features four bays and a crown post roof, while the aisles were demolished in the 14th century. Notable features include the Early English crossing arches with stop-chamfers and deep moulded abaci. The chancel has lancet capitals of Canterbury type, characterized by trumpet-shaped bowls, square abaci, and acanthus foliage. Inside the chancel, there are five Bathurst cartouches, the earliest dating to 1688, as well as notable brasses, including one for Alice Drayton, who died in 1468.
