Description

A row of houses dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The ground floor is built of red and grey brick, predominantly in Flemish bond on the left side and stretcher bond with applied studding on the right. The first floor is weatherboarded on the left and hung with fishscale tiles on the right. The roof is tiled, and originally comprised a gable on the left and a half-hip on the right. Red and grey brick stacks project from the left and right gable ends, and a central ridge stack is positioned towards the centre. It likely originated as a 4-bay timber-framed structure, with two bays to the left and one to the right of the stack. The building features a stone plinth to the right end, a moulded wooden fillet beneath the fishscale tiles, and an irregular arrangement of 5-paned casement windows. There are two three-light casements to the left of the stack, and three two-light casements below the stack and to the right. Boarded doors are situated beside each other between windows on the left side of the row, serving Nos. 3 and 2. No. 1 has a ribbed door with a flat corniced hood centrally located in the right section. Short, two-storey rear wings are attached to the left, right, and centre, each with a lower ridge. The interior, which was only partially inspected, reveals gunstock-jowled principal posts in the bay to the left of the stack, alongside a chamfered axial beam and bevelled joists on the ground floor. A brick fireplace with a cambered, chamfered bressumer, topped with a pyramid stop, is also present. The property was formerly known as Court Lodge Cottages.
