Description
Springfield is a large, irregular house built in 1891 for the Balston family, who owned Springfield Mill. Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, the house features two storeys and is constructed of red brick with yellow brick dressings. It has a tiled roof with ridge tiles. On the right side, there is a projecting gable with finials, and a central gable that also has finials. The left side includes a two-storey gable with the entrance located underneath. The entrance features a round-headed recessed doorway surrounded by a Renaissance-style frame, flanked by fluted pilasters. The windows are either mullioned or consist of mullioned and transomed casements, and there is a panel above the doorcase with a date stone.
