Description
East Farleigh Bridge is a road bridge located in East Farleigh, partly within the Barming Civil Parish. It likely dates from the 14th century and is constructed from roughly coursed ragstone with stone coping. The bridge is approached at an angle from the southwest and has a slight camber towards the center. It spans the water with four pointed arches, with the two central arches being higher. Each arch features a doubly hollow-chamfered stone rib on the outer sides and two plain-chamfered ribs on the underside. The arches are flanked by full-height cutwaters on both sides of the bridge. There is a blind, chamfered skew arch at the angle between the bridge and the retaining wall of the south approach road. The south-west retaining wall is approximately 43 meters long and increases in height to support the road across the low ground before the bridge. Additionally, there is a low later arch with stone voussoirs that spans the towpath on the north bank. This bridge is part of a series of medieval stone bridges across the River Medway and is considered one of the finest medieval bridges in southern England. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
