Description
Owletts is a building constructed in 1683/4 by Bonham Hayes. It is made of red brick and features a moulded brick string course. A panelled parapet was added in the 18th century. The building has a steeply pitched hipped tiled roof, with narrow end bays that project to form closets and a slight central projection. There are seven sash windows and three dormers. A modern porch with a re-set panelled door is supported by engaged Doric columns, topped with a pediment and a semi-circular fanlight. The entrance is accessed by two steps with wrought iron handrails.
Two large panelled chimney stacks, dated 1683, are prominent features, along with lead downpipes that have heads inscribed "G.G. 1754". The east and west facades each have three sash windows and two dormers. A large modern single-storey bay has been added to the east. The north facade has a central projection that marks the staircase, featuring two tall "croise" windows with leaded lights and three ox eye windows above.
In 1925, two projections were added by Sir Herbert Baker, and a 19th-century wing was added at the north-west corner. Inside, the building boasts a fine staircase, a plaster ceiling, bolection mouldings on the fireplaces, and panelling dated from 1684. In 1894, the house was passed to the Edmeades family of Nurstead and later, through marriage, to the Baker family. In 1938, Sir Herbert Baker, who lived there, donated the property to the National Trust.
