Description
The east (and main) gate to the Army Ordnance Depot at Risborough Barracks in Shorncliffe Camp was built around 1899 to 1902.
The gate piers are made of red brick, accented with yellower brick and stone dressings, and feature wrought iron gates. Each pier has a square, black-painted brick base with a chamfered top, which includes a square drain hole cut through on a west-east axis. The piers are bi-partite and panelled, divided unequally by a stone band, with insets edged in curved section yellow bricks. The upper panel on the east elevation displays a terracotta plaque featuring the arms of the Army Ordnance Department, which includes the initials ‘A.O.D.’ and a shield with three cannon balls above three cannons. The piers are topped with a moulded brick and stone cornice and stone ball finials. The original decorative wrought iron gates remain intact.
