Description
The Town Hall, built in 1794, is located at 1253 High Street on the north side. The ground floor originally served as an open market, featuring a carriage entrance at each end, flanked by a stone wall with rusticated stuccoed quoins. Between the entrances, there is an arcade supported by two rows of four Tuscan stone columns. The first floor houses the Council Chamber or Guildhall, which is stuccoed and has five windows, with the three central window bays slightly projecting. The centre projection and both sides of the wings are accented with long and short quoins. A cornice and parapet, complete with a pediment over the central projection, top the building, which has a slate roof and tall sash windows with intact glazing bars. A clock is mounted on brackets projecting from the tympanum of the pediment, likely added later. Inside the Council Chamber, there is a fine marble fireplace adorned with Ionic half-columns and festoons, along with a festooned overmantel above the door. The Town Hall, along with Nos 67 to 79 (odd), forms a group.
