Description
St John's Hospital Almshouses are a row of six houses built in 1805, located set back from the roadway behind the Sandwich United Reformed Church. The almshouses were originally founded in 1287 but were rebuilt at the rear in the 17th century and refaced at the front. They are constructed of yellow brick with a tiled roof, featuring a red brick modillion eaves cornice. The windows have yellow rubbed brick arches above them, and there are segmental arches over the doors. All the glazing bars are intact, and the doors are modern two-panel designs with the upper panel glazed. The almshouses, along with Nos 14 to 22 (even) and the United Reformed Church, as well as Nos 2 to 12 (even) Moat Sole, form a cohesive group.
