Description

The Close, originally a workhouse, dates to 1835. It comprises a tall, two-storey central building in brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof, flanked by lower, two-storey side wings that extend to form a courtyard at the rear. The central section has five bays defined by pilasters, with three windows on the first floor in alternate bays. The ground floor features three windows, two of which are located in the outer bays. A centrally positioned, segmental-headed carriage entry, originally adorned with a keystone, is now blocked by two modern doors. The side wings have seven bays to the right and four bays to the left, each featuring segmental-headed windows with glazing bars and Welsh slate roofs. Within the courtyard, a chapel with a belfry separates the former male and female accommodation ranges.
