Description

Stodmarsh Court Farmhouse is a large house with a complex history, dating back to the late 16th century. The east wing and some of the interior detail are from this earlier period, but the main portion of the house, including the south front, was rebuilt in the 19th century in a Jacobean style. The house is constructed of red brick with a tiled roof. Casement windows are a consistent feature. The east front has a half-H shape. The south wing features a large brick chimney breast and a plain gable, while the north wing has a shaped Dutch gable and a smaller brick chimney breast on its north wall. The south front, which dates to the 19th century, has two storeys and attics, eight windows, and three shaped gables, with simple doorcases. A fine 17th-century well staircase is located within the east wing, featuring a newel post with oak ball finial. In 1914, some 16th-century black and white wall paintings on plaster were removed from the house and are now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
