Description
This is a K6 telephone box, designed in the 1930s and constructed of cast iron, painted red overall. It features long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with applied (rather than perforated) crowns on the top panels. Rectangular white display signs, reading "TELEPHONE", are positioned beneath the shallow curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment. The kiosk stands directly before Cornerways, a former post office which retains an Edward VII post box on its outside wall. Cherry Lodge (a Grade II listed building) stands opposite the kiosk, and St Mary’s Church (a Grade I listed building) is approximately 25 metres to the north-east. The telephone box is prominent in views to and from St Mary's Church and has a strong visual relationship with Cornerways.
The K6 telephone kiosk is a notable example of 20th-century industrial design, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to celebrate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It evolved from his earlier K2 design of 1924, being more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced before being largely replaced in the 1960s.
The K6 has been designated at Grade II for its strong visual relationship with a listed building and its contribution to the wider landscape views.
