Description
Howletts, also known as Howletts Zoo Park, was built by Isaac Baugh in 1787 and was originally called Owletts. The building is two storeys tall with attics and a basement, faced with Roman cement that is now colourwashed, and features a hipped slate roof. The entrance front faces southeast and includes a central projection with three windows resembling a portico, which is approached by ten wide steps. This portico consists of four circular Ionic columns, four pilasters, and is topped with a cornice and pediment. On either side of the portico, there are wings with one window each, set on a high base of cellars, featuring long and short quoins on the outer sides, along with a cornice and blocking course above. All windows have moulded architrave surrounds with intact glazing bars. The entrance includes a round-headed doorcase with a traceried fanlight. The southwest front has five windows, three dormers, and a curved staircase flanked by two pillars with eagles. The northwest front features a central bay with three windows on each floor, while the northeast elevation has a stone balustrade adorned with two lions.
