Description

Westgate House, located at 87 St Dunstan's Street, is a building dated 1750, as indicated by the rainwater heads. It is a three-storey structure made of red brick, topped with a hipped tiled roof and featuring a wide wooden bracket cornice. The façade includes five sashes with intact glazing bars, two string courses, and a plinth. The ground floor sashes are fitted with shutters. A central wooden doorcase is adorned with a pediment and two plain Ionic half columns, leading to panelled reveals and a six-panelled door. There are two stone steps and foot scrapers at the entrance. Wrought iron spear railings with acorn finials surround the area. The lead rainwater heads also display an acorn motif. One sash window is present on the side elevation, while the rear elevation features a Venetian window. To the left, there is a later 19th-century extension that is two storeys high with a gable and lunette, along with three sashes and brick gate piers topped with ball finials. Inside, the house boasts fine marble fireplaces and panelling with ovolo moulding on the edges. A front room contains an overmantel with a painting framed in a Rococo border, and the staircase has carved tread-ends. Westgate House is part of a group with Nos 87 to 95, as well as the garden wall and gate piers to No 87.
