Description
Windmill Farm Oast is an oasthouse built around 1800, which incorporates earlier timbers and was later extended in the 19th century with the addition of two circular kilns. The stowage is timber-framed, featuring a ground floor constructed of diaper brickwork and a first floor that is mostly weatherboarded, with some areas tarred. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles, arranged in two ranges. The west front has two wooden shutters on the first floor, equipped with iron hinges, while the other sides have wooden casements or metal pivoting casements. The two circular kilns are built with a base and top in Sussex bond and a center in header bond. Inside, the stowage exhibits a mix of Sussex bond and English garden wall bond. In the southwest corner, there is a square kiln, pre-dating 1835, made from reused timbers and featuring sockets for diamond-shaped mullions and shutter grooves. The earlier part of the structure includes some diagonal braces and dragon ties, while the remainder of the stowage is from the later 19th century, held together with iron bolts.
