Description
The Wittersham War Memorial is a war memorial designed by Sir George Frampton R A, unveiled on 30 January 1921. It is made of Portland stone and is set on a base and steps of Wealden sandstone.
The monument has a T-shaped plan and stands 5 meters high and 3 meters wide. It features a tapering octagonal column with a moulded cornice and plinth, topped by a tasselled cushion and a crowned orb. The column is placed on a square two-stage pedestal, which sits on a wider moulded base with a shallow step below. This is further set on a shallow stepped square area paved with Wealden sandstone.
On the front, or north-west side, of the upper stage of the pedestal, there is a laurel wreath with the dates 1914-1919 and the inscription 'TO THOSE WHO DIED FOR US' below it. On the south-east side, there is a second identical wreath inscribed 'LEST WE FORGET', flanked by the dates 1939 and 1945. The names of 22 fallen soldiers along with their regiments are inscribed on three sides of the base of the pedestal. Attached to the north-west side are four shallow steps made of Wealden sandstone.
The memorial is located in an elliptical-shaped garden that includes a flowerbed and lawn.
