Description
Smallhythe Place is a 15th-century timber-framed house located on Smallhythe Road. It features close-studding and has an overhanging first floor supported by protruding ends of the floor joists, with the south end propped up on three posts. The building has two storeys and a tiled roof, which includes a renewed brick chimneystack. There are five modern casement windows and one sash window. The roof slopes down to one storey at the rear. Attached to the back is an 18th-century stable building that has two storeys, with the ground floor being part brick and part weatherboarded, topped with a half-hipped tiled roof. The house served as the residence of actress Ellen Terry for many years until her death and is now furnished as it was during her time. Smallhythe Place and the barn form a group.
