Description

Tollgate Cottage is a tollhouse built around 1762 for a Turnpike Trust that managed the road between Faversham and Hythe. The cottage is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, although the south end has been rendered with cement. It features a dentil eaves cornice, an external brick chimneystack on the north side, and a catslide roof on the east. The roof is plaintiled, hipped to the south, while the catslide section has a slate roof. The building is a single storey with one window on the west side.

On the exterior, the west elevation retains the original toll window, which has a wooden pegged architrave, although the glass is from the 20th century. There is an adjoining original wide doorcase with a flat wooden hood supported by brackets, and a 19th-century ribbed plank door that has six arches at the top. The south side has two narrow windows, and the north side features a blocked window in the catslide. There are modern sheds attached to the east, which are not of special interest.

The interior has not been inspected, but survey drawings indicate a simple roof structure with tiebeams and collar beams, a large fireplace in the main front room, and two small rooms in the catslide area.

Historically, this Turnpike Trust was established by an Act in 1762, which included toll-gates at various locations such as Sheldwich, Goatley Lees, Lacton Green, Willesborough, Hythe, Wincheap, and Kempe's Corner. Tollgate Cottage served as the Lacton Green toll house.
