Description
This is a group of seven headstones located about 50 metres northeast of the Church of Saint Gregory and Saint Martin. The headstones include the following:
Cosman Ertz Berger, who died in 1744, has a headstone about 3½ feet high featuring scrolled shoulders at the cornice, wreathed skulls, trumpets, and a central cartouche. Ertz Berger was originally from Basel, Switzerland, became a member of the household of the Earls of Winchelsea, and lived in Wye for 65 years before dying at the age of 89.
Thomas Franklin, a glazier and plumber from the town, died in 1761. His headstone is about 2 feet high and features an incised round arched panel, scrolled shoulders leading to a double domed head with a central baluster support, a skull and trumpet on the left, and a winged hourglass on the right.
Barbara Franklin, who died in 1758, has a headstone identical to Thomas Franklin's, as does an adjacent headstone to the south, though its inscription is illegible.
James Phillpott, who died in 1755, has a headstone about 2 feet high adorned with a cherub head and florid Rocaille decoration, including scallop shells.
Catherine Phillpott, who died in 1744, has a headstone about 2 feet high featuring crude scrolled shoulders and a skull and trumpet motif, along with a round-headed plaque.
Reverend John Bateman, who died in 1749, has a headstone about 2½ feet high, which displays a single skull with palm fronds emerging from scrolled shoulders.
