Description

Wye College features entrance and hall quadrangles constructed between 1893 and 1914, with work completed in 1928. The architects involved were P.B. Chambers for the initial phase, T.E. Colcutt in 1901, and Colcutt and Hamp from 1905 to 1914. The buildings are made of ragstone with red brick and timber framing filled with red brick, topped with a plain tiled roof.

The entrance consists of a two-storey range with gabled parapets and a prominent central gabled gateway. There are stacks on the left and right ends, as well as in the centre left. The first floor features ten mullioned lights arranged in pairs and triplets, while the ground floor has cusped windows with label hoods. The gateway is four-centred arched and has a label hood, with a three-light Perpendicular style window above it.

The right return, which houses the library, is a two-storey brick range showcasing mullioned and transomed lights, interrupted only by a central oriel window. The inner court reveals the rear of the entrance block, displaying exposed timber framing above an open timber arcade. The jettied gable has a pierced and moulded barge-board, and there is a brick inner wall with mullioned windows. Opposite the entrance, two-storey brick ranges include the library, which features a barrel-vaulted ceiling and an oriel window.

The hall range includes a 20th-century bay and two-storey blocks made of brick on flint, with some 18th-century elements featuring glazing bar sashes, while others have mullioned windows. A four-centred arched gateway with an iron screen dates back to 1906. The dining hall, built in 1910 as a gymnasium, separates the two quadrangles and is a single storey with large mullioned and transomed windows, a parapet, and buttresses. The interior includes cruck trusses, an arcaded design, contemporary panelling, chandeliers, and other fittings. There are also later 20th-century quadrangles and blocks to the north.
