Description
Standen is a 15th-century timber-framed building that has been restored and features an elaborate timbered front with plaster infilling. The ground floor includes close-studded sections, while the first floor overhangs on an embattled bressumer, which has a plaster cove beneath it and carved brackets. The first floor is adorned with ornamental timbering in diamond and semi-circle patterns. The building has two storeys and attics, topped by a hipped tiled roof with two hipped dormers and a wooden eaves cornice. There are three casement windows and a large red brick chimney breast on the north-east wall. The south-west wall has been refaced with red brick on the ground floor and is tile-hung above. Inside, there is oak panelling, and the front room is dated 1578. It is believed that the building was used by one of the religious houses as a hostelry for pilgrims traveling to Canterbury.
