Description
Vane Court is a 15th-century timber-framed Wealden hall-house located on Smarden Road in Biddenden. The building features plaster infilling and curved braces, standing two storeys tall with attics. The end window bays on the first floor extend over the protruding ends of the floor joists and brackets. The central recessed portion has overhanging eaves supported at each end by a curved brace and in the middle by another pair of braces on a projecting bracket. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped, covered with tiles, and includes two modern hipped dormers. There are four casement windows, and a brick chimney-breast is present on the north wall, with a modern extension built out beyond it on the ground floor. Notably, King Prajadhipok of Siam, who reigned from 1925 to 1935 and abdicated in 1935, lived here for several years. Vane Court is a fine example of a Wealden hall-house, which is not a typical style in Biddenden.
