Description
2, 4 and 6 Hastings Road, also known as St Mary's Cottages or Church Cottages, is a significant 18th-century rectangular building situated near the churchyard and facing the road on two sides. The ground level is higher on the side facing the churchyard, giving this side two storeys and attics, while the other side has three storeys. The building features three windows on the east and west sides and two on the north side. It is clad in weatherboarding designed to mimic masonry and has a hipped tiled roof with a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The glazing bars are intact.
The east front, which faces the churchyard, has two bays on both the ground and first floors, with a doorway in between. This doorway is adorned with grooved pilasters, a pediment, a semi-circular fanlight, and a six-panelled door. The north front, facing the village, includes a wooden gallery on the first floor, leading to a former shop front that features a curved shop window with glazing bars, flanked by doorways with narrow pilasters and half-glazed doors, topped with a projecting cornice. The west front, facing Hastings Road, has a long, narrow window that illuminates the staircase.
