Description
The Horse and Rider sculpture, created by Dame Elisabeth Frink, was originally commissioned by Trafalgar House in 1975. This particular cast of the sculpture was installed on the south side of High Street at its junction with Trafalgar Street in Winchester in 1983.
The sculpture is made of bronze and stands approximately 244 centimeters high on a rough base set into brick paving, which is surrounded by a brick retaining wall. Both the horse and rider are roughly finished, facing northwest. The horse is depicted in a walking pose, featuring a lightly-stylized mane, a shortened tail, and an expressionless gaze, without any saddlery.
The rider is a man who is unclothed and barefoot. He sits slightly askew on the horse, with his left shoulder pushed back, allowing his arm to drop and his hand to rest casually against the horse's left flank. His right arm is bent forward at the elbow, with his hand placed on the horse's mane. The muscles of both the horse and rider are lightly but clearly defined.
