Description

The structures comprising the terraced garden to Amport House were designed in 1923 by Lutyens and Jekyll. This formal garden features a rectangular area arranged in two shallow terraces situated below the old south terrace of the house. The upper terrace includes a central oval stone-framed basin, from which narrow canals extend from the center of each end. These canals turn at right angles and descend to the lower terrace, where they curve outward to terminate in decorative square basins.

Stone paving lines the water channels on both sides, and stone walls border each terrace. In the center, flights of stone steps connect the two levels. The entire garden is enclosed by a deep wall that separates it from the parkland beyond. The planting scheme, which is both formal and informal, is aligned with axial lines of pleached limes to the west and features a lower informal garden to the east. The layout also includes large vases on pedestals and earthenware jars.
