Description
The Church of St John is a parish church built in 1855 and enlarged in 1885, designed in the Decorated style. It has a cruciform layout with a north vestry and a south porch, while the south transept is raised to form a tower. The church is constructed from west country limestone with Bath stone dressings, featuring cill bands, a plinth, and stepped buttresses. The windows have traceried coupled lights, with three on the east side and four on the west. It has a steep slate roof. The tower consists of two stages, includes a staircase turret, and is topped with an octagonal spire. Inside, the church retains its original furnishings, and notable features include a series of medallions made of Flemish stained glass, set into the windows in various shapes such as circles, ovals, and rectangles with square or cambered leads. These medallions depict themes from Christian iconography, with one made of clear and tinted glass, showcasing a classical style.
