Description

SU 2944 AMPORT FURZEDOWN LANE 8/5 Stables and Bothy 100 metres North East 8/1/82 of Amport House (formerly listed as stable block to North East of Amport House ) GV II

This structure forms the north and east sides of the courtyard made by the earlier stable block; it is taller and more elaborate in design, c1900. Yellow brick walls with stone dressings, hipped slate roof. 2 storeys. On the inner (south) face there is a gabled centrepiece flanked by wings of 2 windows, with a return block (of 4 windows) completing the L-shape. The upper windows are ½ dormers with hipped roofs, the centrepiece has a high loading door with a stone frame (pediment, panelled pilasters, key, cill on 3 brackets):the lower-openings are plain with cambered arches and stone cills. The return block is symmetrical (on its west face) with a pediment gable above the 2 taller middle-windows. The outside (north) elevation follows the same style, producing an impressive appearance, with the pediment gable (& high loading door) off centre, with 2 ½ dormers to the east and 1 to the west: there is a middle band of small ventilation openings, of 2.2.2 arrangement, and at the east side 3 sash windows: again these are hipped roofed dormers, cambered openings; and a high plinth.
