GOSPORT HASLAR ROAD Nos. 1-5 (Consecutive) Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar

GV II

Wash house and laundry (in 1832), rebuilt as terrace of 5 houses, at naval hospital. 1756, built by John Turner; converted c1876, with 1908 scullery annexes. Red brick with paler rubbed brick heads and stone dressings, partly rendered, ridge and gable stacks and a slate roof. Double-depth plan. 2 storeys; 8-window range. Parapeted front with cornice and stone coping and stone band over stepped brickwork; originally 8 windows with rubbed brick heads, now some blank, and 5 doorways introduced. Wider off-centre windows with 8/8-pane sashes, and narrower stair lights with 4/4-pane sashes. End gables have blind windows. Rear similar with single-storey sanitary annexes and later lateral stacks, and C20 dormers. INTERIOR not inspected. HISTORY: As ancillary buildings these formed part of the original layout of the hospital, which had accommodation in the corner sections of the main range. Haslar was the first large hospital built by the navy, mostly for convalescent seamen. These form an important functional element within this outstanding and remarkably complete complex.
