Description

Numbers 1-5 at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, were originally built as a wash house and laundry in 1832. They were rebuilt as a terrace of five houses in 1756 by John Turner and converted around 1876, with scullery annexes added in 1908. The buildings are constructed of red brick with paler rubbed brick heads and stone dressings, with some areas rendered. They feature ridge and gable stacks and a slate roof, arranged in a double-depth plan over two storeys and an eight-window range. The front has a parapet with a cornice and stone coping, along with a stone band over stepped brickwork. Originally, there were eight windows with rubbed brick heads, but some have been made blank, and five doorways have been added. The wider off-centre windows have 8/8-pane sashes, while the narrower stair lights have 4/4-pane sashes. The end gables have blind windows. The rear is similar, with single-storey sanitary annexes, later lateral stacks, and 20th-century dormers. The interior was not inspected. Historically, these buildings were part of the original layout of the hospital, which provided accommodation in the corner sections of the main range. Haslar was the first large hospital built by the navy, primarily for convalescent seamen, and these buildings are an important functional element within this outstanding and remarkably complete complex.
