Description

The medical stores located southeast of the main entrance to the Royal Naval Hospital in Haslar were built in 1853. Constructed from red brick, they feature rubbed brick flat arches and slate roofs. The building has a single-depth plan along the northeast perimeter wall and is a single storey with a 20-bay range. The stores consist of four 5-bay sections, each with central segmental-arched doorways and 2-light casements set in square recessed panels. The external elevations serve as the perimeter wall for the hospital compound and include blind windows. Inside, the building retains a mid-19th century king-post roof. Historically, it was used as stores and replaced the original perimeter railing and porter's lodge. This building is part of a group that includes the main entrance, northeast boundary wall, and a matching store to the northwest, all of which are functional elements within this significant site that delineate the extent of the mid-18th century hospital. Haslar was the first large hospital constructed by the navy.
