Description
Bursledon Windmill, built in 1741, stands on the site of a former post-mill and represents an early example of a tower mill, a relatively uncommon structure within a county known for its water mills. The windmill is a five-story circular brick tower that tapers as it rises. The interior retains a complete set of timber machinery, largely unchanged, which is of national importance. The external features, including the cap, sails, chain gear, and timber gallery, were lost when the windmill ceased operation in 1907. A restoration scheme was underway in 1979. The building is designated as particularly important due to its early date and the rarity of its preserved machinery.
