Description
The Church of St Leonard dates to the 13th century and has undergone alterations around 1828, a remodelling, and substantial additions by Sedding in 1888. Originally consisting of a simple chancel and nave, remnants of this original layout remain in the form of a good moulded chancel arch on shafts, and the character of the original nave walling. The chancel, transepts (with western aisles), and much of the present structure are restorations and additions employing lancet windows and traceried lights to the east end and transept gables. A particularly interesting feature is the western open porch or narthex, constructed with intricate open timber framing set on low stone walling, accompanied by a timber-clad bell turret in a similar style. The church contains a 12th-century font, which is an arcaded drum. External wall monuments are also present. The church is approached via a lychgate in an Arts and Crafts style, dated 1892.
