Description
Chapel Cottage is a building that originally served as both a cottage and a chapel, and is now a single house. The cottage on the west side dates from around 1750, while the former Baptist chapel on the east side was built around 1800. There have been some alterations made in the 20th century.
The cottage features timber framing clad in weatherboarding, standing on a brick plinth with a tiled roof that is half-hipped to the west. It has two storeys and two windows, with a two-bay end chimneystack plan. The front elevation includes two 19th-century casement windows on the first floor, a 20th-century sash window on the ground floor, and a doorcase with a flat hood supported by brackets, leading to a 20th-century plank door. The side elevation has one six-pane and one four-pane fixed casement window. The rear elevation retains original sliding casements on the first floor, a traditional type casement on the ground floor, and a 20th-century wooden and tiled porch.
The former chapel is also timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, with a tiled roof that is half-hipped to the west. It is a single storey with three windows. The westernmost window is a sash window with 12 panes, while the others have been replaced with 20th-century French windows. The rear elevation features a multi-paned window.
Inside, the building showcases an exposed frame made of thin scantling. Historically, the cottage was occupied by a carpenter or wheelwright around 1750, and the Baptist chapel was de-consecrated around 1950. This information was provided by the owner.
