Description
Church Farm Cottage, Church Cottage, and Old Church House were originally built as a workhouse, later serving as a schoolhouse, and have since been converted into four cottages, now three. One of the chimneys is dated 1739, but the entire range, except for the northernmost cottage, likely dates back to the late 17th century or earlier. The building is two storeys high with nine windows, constructed of red brick with grey headers on a stone base. It features an ornamental red brick string course and a brick cogging eaves cornice on the central portion of the block. The roof is hipped and tiled. The windows are casements with wooden mullions and transoms, adorned with diamond-shaped leaded panes. The southernmost cottage has a doorway with a flat hood supported by brackets, and another doorway accessed by four steps, framed with a moulded architrave and featuring a door with six fielded panels. Additionally, there is a plaque in the center of the building inscribed "Presented to George Darby of Marklye, 1866."
