Description
The Gibraltar Tower, originally called Heathfield Tower, is an ornamental tower located in Heathfield Park. It was built by Francis Newbery between 1792 and 1793 to commemorate the successful defense of Gibraltar by General Lord Heathfield from 1779 to 1782, and it may have been designed by John Crunden. The tower is constructed of ashlar and consists of three storeys.
The ground floor is octagonal and features eight coved and pointed recesses, although the heads of these recesses are now filled with weather-boarding. Above the ground floor, there is a cornice. The upper parts of the tower are round. On the first floor, there are four pointed windows (also filled with weather-boarding) and four round recesses that contain quatrefoil ornamentation. There is a stringcourse above the first floor. The top storey has four round windows (again filled with weather-boarding), and it is topped with machicolation, a cornice, and a blocking course.
Inside, the tower includes a circular staircase and three rooms that were originally decorated with views of Gibraltar, which have since been removed.
