Description

This is a barn dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, built in two phases. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, covered by a clay-tile roof. The barn has seven bays, with a hipped roof to the south and a gable to the north. Inside, it is single-aisled. The front of the barn features two central cart doors and two loading doors at the south end. The roof has deep eaves and a steep pitch.

The interior retains significant original timber framing, including wall posts, a ground cill, two ranks of intermediate rails per bay, and two studs per bay, all of which are pegged and scarfed. The aisle to the west has arched braces, with some missing. The north bays contain three queen post struts (one off-centre), a king post, and an end gable king post. Further features include pegged arched braces supporting a collar beam across three bays and a half-gable bay, with collars pegged to each rafter. Three north bays have principal rafters and pegged butt purlins, while the three south bays and the south gable have curved braces in the upper wall bays and a framed openwork division to the end half-bay. The west side of the barn is built upon a brick and stone basement to accommodate the sloping ground.
