Description

Ashdown House School, dating to around 1790, is a significant example of the work of the Sussex architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who later emigrated to America. It is one of only two known buildings he designed in Sussex. The house is a square mansion of three storeys, with three windows on each facade. It is constructed of ashlar stone. The main entrance is marked by a semi-circular portico with three Ionic columns and two pilasters, now glazed and with an iron railing above. French windows are set within arcading on the ground floor, flanking the portico. Venetian shutters are fitted to the ground and first floors. A cornice runs above the first floor. The third floor is divided into three sections; the outer sections are flush with the lower part of the house and connected by a parapet, while the central section is recessed and roofed with slate. There is one window in each of these sections. The roof is slate covered. Modern additions have been made to the north side of the building.
