Description

Glen Andred is a large house built in 1866-7 for E W Cooke, designed by the architect Norman Shaw. It is a two-storey building, with the ground floor constructed of red brick and the upper floor tile-hung. The roof is tiled. The front facade is symmetrical in overall massing but features asymmetrical detailing. It has five gables, with the three central ones decorated with pargeting (decorative plasterwork) and the side gables tile-hung. A two-storey porch is centrally placed, featuring a Gothic doorway and a flat, wooden oriel window above. Below the flanking windows are large mullioned and transomed windows, with similar windows on both floors. An oriel window is located on the extreme left of the front elevation, on the first floor. The garden front is elevated and also has a tile-hung upper floor. A tile-hung gable is present on the left, with a dormer window to the right. A large chimney stack is in the centre of the garden front, with an oriel window to the right. A two-storey canted bay window is at the left corner, topped with a hopped roof and a metal finial. A gable is situated to the right of the bay window.
