Description

Rocks Farm is a house dating from the early 18th century, which was altered in the early 19th century and is built on medieval foundations. The main facade faces the modern road. The ground floor is constructed of red brick with black headers arranged in a diaper bond, topped with mathematical tiles. It features a hipped tiled roof with a brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys with two windows on the first floor, which includes two 12-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves. The ground floor showcases a 20-light curved bow window from the late 18th or early 19th century, while the street front has two 16-pane sash windows, with a painted brick ground floor and tile-hung first floor displaying a diaper pattern. The sandstone base indicates the earlier building's presence. Inside, notable features include an 18th-century round-beaded china cupboard that incorporates four earlier linenfold panels with H hinges, which is said to have been a communion cupboard. Other interior details consist of an early 19th-century marble fireplace, an early 18th-century dado rail, a two-panelled door, an open fireplace in the kitchen, and a three-plank door with old studs and pirtle hinges. This building is located on the site of the pre-1660 rectory where the grandfather of Nicholas Culpeper, the herbalist, lived.
