Description
Howbourne Farm Barn is a field barn dating from around 1800. The walls are made of stone at the ends and on the west side, while the east side is constructed of brick. The barn consists of five bays and originally featured a narrow aisle on the east side. Large outshuts were added to the west side and south end at a later date, and the entire structure was re-roofed. This renovation created a long tile catslide roof on the west and south sides, which is interrupted by a cart entry, while the east side has an uninterrupted sweep. The barn features gunstock jowls on the posts, short straight braces to the tie beams, and angle strut trusses. There are also diagonal braces extending from the jowls of the posts to the ground. This barn is a handsome and characteristic example of a Sussex field barn.
